Design Systems

Lights On for Dark Mode

My expertise in book design is in creating visual narratives that help guide readers through complex content, establishing logical flow and connections even in publications that lack an inherent chronological or thematic structure.

Crafting Components

I developed a comprehensive pagination component that balances functionality with design system principles. The solution includes dynamic state handling, accessibility features, and responsive layouts while maintaining visual consistency through carefully implemented design tokens. The component's architecture accommodates various numerical formats and edge cases, making it a versatile addition to our design system.

Building a Newsletter Template Library in Figma

From March 2022 to December 2023, a newsletter template redesign project at The Washington Post transformed seven separate templates into one unified system. The project addressed design inconsistencies and rigid templates, implementing a modular system with improved accessibility and typography. The results showed increased engagement rates and better conversion, while giving editors more flexibility in content creation.

Guidance on Implementing User Education

I led the development of comprehensive user education guidelines at The Washington Post, focusing on creating clear, consistent, and effective ways to guide users through our digital products. My approach emphasizes contextual learning, where guidance appears at the moment it's most relevant to users. I established principles for when and how to implement various education patterns - from subtle tooltips to more detailed walkthroughs - ensuring that help content enhances rather than interrupts the user experience.
